Lewis Mumford (1895–1990) was one of the foremost American intellectuals of the twentieth century. The Lewis Mumford Papers and associated collections document Mumford's work as scholar, critic, and teacher, as well as his personal life.

Information for researchers

 

The central collection documenting Mumford's life and career is the Lewis Mumford Papers (Ms. Coll. 2), in the Kislak Center. A number of smaller collections and more recent acquisitions complement this collection. Following is a separation list.

Major collections

Ms. Coll. 2 (197 boxes): Lewis Mumford Papers, ca. 1905-1987. The Mumford papers provide extensive documentation of Mumford's professional life over a period of approximately seventy years. Note: For a full listing of correspondence in the Lewis Mumford Papers, researchers must search in the main online catalog, Franklin.

Ms. Coll. 958 (48 boxes): Sophia Wittenburg Mumford papers, 1875-1997. The Sophia Wittenberg Mumford papers contain, correspondence, writings, diaries, photographs, memorabilia, audio-visual material, financial and legal material documenting the private and public life of Sophia and her husband Lewis Mumford.
