Gifts from Arnold and Deanne Kaplan, Totaling $12 Million, Enrich Judaic Scholarship and Digital Humanities at the Penn Libraries

The University of Pennsylvania Libraries has received a series of gifts from Arnold and Deanne Kaplan, including the world’s first endowed position in Judaica digital humanities, totaling $12 million. The Kaplans’ contributions also comprise an in-kind gift of collections of Americana and Early American Judaica, research fellowships, and an endowment for continuing acquisitions.

Waife, great-grandson of the writer Sholem Aleichem and President of the Sholom Aleichem Network, Inc. will bring two iconic documents of American Jewish History, the handwritten ethical will and tombstone epitaph of celebrated Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem, to the Penn Libraries.

Penn Libraries’ Innovative Digital Humanities Collaboration, “Scribes of the Cairo Geniza,” Enters a New Phase

This spring represents an exciting advancement in our Judaica Digital Humanities group’s innovative collaboration with Zooniverse, a citizen science web portal, that brings the Cairo Geniza to a mass audience online. “Scribes of the Cairo Geniza,” a project that classified and sorted over 10 percent of the entire Cairo Geniza in its first phase, will soon launch its second phase.
