The year 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of the deaths of two of the world's great writers: William Shakespeare (1564-1616) and Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). Both authors lived in the golden age of European exploration when new discoveries were changing the way Europe understood and represented the world. This exhibit juxtaposes the way exploration and geography are represented in literature and in maps from the early modern period. Accompanying the exhibit will be a display of the digital project Shakespeare on the Map.
This one-day conference will explore literary and cultural intersections and highlight the Kislak Center's Spanish Golden Age and English Renaissance literature. The conference concludes with a performance by Penn's Underground Shakespeare Company. Participants include Marina Brownlee (Princeton), Roger Chartier (Penn), Steve Dolph (Penn), Georgina Dopico-Black (NYU), Antonio Feros (Penn), Carmen Peraita (Villanova), Melissa Sanchez (Penn), Peter Stallybrass (Penn), Sarah Wall-Randell (Wellesley), and Kathryn Swanton (CUNY).
