The Van Pelt Libraries hold over 65,000 works of and about francophone literature, poetry and plays.  The great majority of this material was published in France, Switzerland or Belgium.  However, a significant amount of francophone fiction and criticism in our collections were published in countries outside of Europe that use French for historical reasons--either because of French conquest and settlement (Quebec) or colonization (Senegal and Morocco, for example).  As academic fields and trends become more oriented towards under explored, transnational and post-colonial subjects, this material becomes more important and the Libraries spend more effort to collect it robustly.  Non-European francophone fiction and criticism currently account for over 5% of our total collection in this area.

Special strengths include works from Quebec (over 2500 works)  and Senegal (over 500 works)
