Gulliver's Reading
On exhibit September 1, 2006 - December 15th, 2006
Writers make books from other books, which is why studies of their readings and of their libraries can tell us much about their work. This exhibition displays a small selection from an anonymous gift in 2005 to the University of Pennsylvania. The donor reconstructed a large portion of the library owned or read by Jonathan Swift, the great eighteenth-century satirist. The exhibition includes a few books Swift himself owned, a manuscript in which he lists the contents of a pamphlet collection in his library, and, where possible, the editions of books he owned or read.
