Description
Philadelphian Thomas Eakins' 1875, The Gross Clinic, originally considered too vulgar and morbid for public display, is now one of the most admired American paintings. Together with his Agnew Clinic, it pays tribute to Philadelphia's reputation for excellence in medicine and medical education. In conjunction with Penn's Freshman Reading Project, Dissecting The Gross Clinic explores the history behind the painting as well as the relationship between Thomas Eakins and Dr. Samuel D. Gross.
