The focus of the exhibition was necessarily upon Finlay’s printed work where verbal and visual maintain and intriguing dialogue. Yet since it is impossible to ignore his increased involvement over the years with garden-making, the exhibition also addresses this aspect of his oeuvre. But it is self-evidently impossible to exhibit gardens. The solution, therefore, was to track some of the connections between Finlay’s printed work and his garden creation via the printed and published records—a more complicated and fascinating interchange (conceptually, let alone bibliographically) than it would seem to be at first sight. The items exhibited belong to the collections of the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, Ruth and Marvin Sackner, and the curator John Dixon Hunt.
