John H. Pollack
John H. Pollack is Curator, Research Services, in the Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts at the University of Pennsylvania Libraries. He has worked in this department since 1995. His responsibilities include providing assistance to students and scholars, and teaching and organizing class sessions centered on the collections. He is also responsible for the Furness Shakespeare Library, which is part of the Kislak Center.
John holds a PhD in English from Penn and a BA from Washington University in St. Louis. He specializes in Early American literature and history, and early modern book history. His research has focused on topics including Native American languages; colonial writings from New France; and Benjamin Franklin and colonial education.
For five decades social worker turned photographer Harvey Finkle (Penn MSW '61) has documented immigrant communities as well as social and political activism across Philadelphia and beyond. He began photographing the work of the Sanctuary Movement in the early 1980s. In 2003 his exhibition Philadelphia Mosaic: New Immigrants in America was held at the Free Library of Philadelphia.
This pop-up exhibition, made possible by Finkle's 2020 gift of his archive to the Penn Libraries, highlights photographs from both periods and is presented in association with the Wolf Humanities Center’s roundtable, Immigration: A Philadelphia Perspective.
Co-sponsored by the Wolf Humanities Center, in association with the Wolf Humanities Center's February 16, 2022 roundtable, Immigration: A Philadelphia Perspective. This roundtable and the Harvey Finkle exhibition will both be held in the Kislak Center.
